Chapter 4: Half
Twenty thousand dollars.
I lay awake doing the math on my ceiling.
Five boys at four thousand each, or four at five, or Austin alone at twenty because he could.
Half was ten.
Ten thousand dollars was the whole first phase of the glasshouse.
At two in the morning I stopped being scared and started being organized.
The lacrosse tailgate ran all Saturday afternoon in the field lot behind the stadium.
Two hundred people, a hundred trucks, every tailgate down.
Austin had a pickup with a keg in the bed and a speaker the size of a fridge.
Jess walked in beside me with her hands in her overalls.
"Tell me your plan one more time."
"I walk up. I ask for my half. In writing."
"That's not a plan, that's a sentence."
"It's a short plan."
Linc was already there, leaning on Austin's tailgate with a cup he wasn't drinking.
He saw me and straightened up.
Rule six.
He looked at me.
It still did something to my stomach, and I hated that.
"You came," he said.
"I came for Austin."
Austin grinned. "Finally. Somebody with taste."
Ainslee sat on the hood of a white Range Rover two trucks down with her friends around her.
The words came drifting off her.
[ROOMMATE AT THE TAILGATE]
[she does not belong here, look at her boots]
[linc is literally faking it so hard and she can't tell]
I stopped in front of Austin's tailgate.
I made sure my voice carried.
"I hear the pot's at twenty thousand."
The speaker was still thumping.
Everything else around it went quiet.
Austin's grin got wider. "Where'd you hear that?"
"Doesn't matter. Rule seven. Whatever your boys bet on me, I get half." I took my green notebook out of my back pocket and a pen out of my braid. "So I'd like my ten thousand in writing, please."
