Chapter 17: You Never Said No

Yvette woke at dawn with her head on his arm and the number heavy in her head.

Ninety-nine.

Alaric was awake.

He lay on his back looking at the ceiling, and he had not moved in a long time.

"You said you would answer," she said. "Not in the morning room. You said later."

"I did."

"It is later."

He turned his head on the pillow.

"I was twenty-seven when you came, and I did not believe a word you said," he said. "I thought you were a rival's spy. I told Calla to stay away from you."

"I remember."

"The first time I asked you to die, Calla was nineteen and her heart had stopped in a restaurant. The doctors gave her a month."

Yvette said nothing.

"I did not plan it. I said, on the bridge, that I would give anything." His mouth twisted. "And you said, I can give it. And I said, what do you mean."

"I told you a body does not matter to me."

"You said yes before I had finished the question."

She frowned.

"That is what I held against you," he said. "Not the death. That you did it in one breath. You did not ask me what it was for. You did not ask me to be sorry. You did not ask for anything."

"Alaric."

"Seven times." His voice was quiet. "I asked you seven times, and not once did you say no. I decided you did not care what happened to you. I decided you wanted the door."

"You decided that."
