Chapter 19: Under the Lights
The microphone was warm from the last speaker's hand.
Alaric stood at the center of the stage with the lights on his face, and found he could not see his grandmother at all.
He could see Yvette.
She stood halfway down the aisle between two officers with her wrists locked in front of her and her chin up.
She was looking at him, and she was not afraid.
That was what he would remember afterward.
"Good evening," he said.
His voice went out over three hundred people and came back off the far wall.
"My grandmother has just told you that the woman beside the detective forged a hospital document."
Nobody in the ballroom moved.
"A donor consent has one signature on it. The donor's." He looked at the detective. "Detective, a person cannot forge her own name. She is standing in front of you."
"Sir, that is for a court."
"It is for you to understand before you take her out of my sister's gala in handcuffs."
The detective's jaw worked.
"The papers have discrepancies," he said.
"They do. The hospital filed them eleven days before she signed, at my direction, because I wanted her to have a job when she woke up." Alaric heard the room stir. "If that is a crime, it is mine. Arrest me."
A woman gasped.
Calla stood at her chair, with tears running down her face, and clapped once, loudly.
Nobody joined her.
"I am the chairman of this foundation," Alaric said. "Tonight my grandmother asked you to vote me out of that chair, because I will not let her send this woman away."
