Chapter 7: Night Shift

Three in the morning on the pediatric floor is the quietest hour and the cruelest.

I was charting at the station under one low light when my nurse manager came out of her office with her coat already on.

She never came in at night.

"Hannah. A moment."

I followed her into the little glass room where we gave families bad news.

"I received a call from a Navy officer yesterday," she said. "A Lieutenant Commander Whittlesey. She was very polite."

My stomach dropped.

"She says you've been under severe strain. She says it might not be safe for you to be on shift with patients. She wanted me to know, for the children's sake."

"She's trying to get me fired."

"She's trying to look like she's not." My manager sat. "I'm telling you because I've known you six years. You've never missed a med. But I'm obligated to document the call."

"Document it."

"I'm also documenting that I've reviewed your charting this month and found it exemplary."

I let out a short laugh that was mostly relief.

When I came out, Jo was standing at the station, arms folded, with a parent behind her.

The father of the girl in 4B was a tall exhausted man in a hoodie who had barely spoken in nine days.

"We heard," he said awkwardly. "Sorry. The walls here are thin."

"You heard what?"

"That somebody called to say you're unstable." He cleared his throat. "My daughter's been here nine days. You sat with her through the night when her IV blew. I'll write whoever you want."
