Chapter 10: Sugar

I held onto the workbench with my free hand.

"Say it," I said.

"My friend ran all three samples through the pharmacy lab," Joanna said. "Tonight, because I told her it was a safety issue."

"And?"

"The two bottles Brynn gave you, the August one and the fresh one, have no medicine in them."

I didn't understand her.

I stood there and listened to the words one at a time, and none of them fit together.

"What do you mean, no medicine?"

"I mean the tablets are lactose and a binder. Milk sugar, Samantha. That's all." Her voice broke on the last word. "It's a placebo. Both bottles. The label says clomiphene and there's none in them."

"That's wrong."

"I watched the printout come off."

"It's wrong," I said. "I took those every day. I took them for four years."

"I know."

"The doctor in the city said they were working. She said my body just needed time."

"I know, honey. I know."

"What about the new one?" I said. "The one from the pharmacy across town. Letrozole."

"That one is exactly what the label says."

The shed tilted.

I let go of the bench and sat down on the cold floor, and the lantern swung on its hook, and I watched it.

Four years.

Forty-eight bottles.

Every month, I had put a little white pill in my mouth and prayed.
