Chapter 16: Prove It
Brynn waited until breakfast on the third day.
She came up the companionway at eight with a mug in one hand and my brown pharmacy bottle in the other.
She sat down across from the camera.
The red light was on.
Finnegan looked at me, and I gave him the smallest shake of my head.
"Sam," Brynn said gently. "I have to say something, and I'm sorry that it's here. But I'm worried."
"About what?"
"I was looking for sunscreen in your tote." She set the bottle on the table and turned the label toward the lens. "And I found this."
Letrozole, 2.5 mg.
It had my name and a pharmacy across town and a date in June.
"This is a fertility drug, honey," she said. "A strong one. And you're pregnant. You told Tobias on the dock."
The tablet on its clip chimed, and went on chiming.
"You didn't tell me you'd switched. You didn't tell anyone."
She pressed her fingers to her mouth.
"Is this what you've been taking, Sam? Without a doctor? I'm a pharmacist. I can't just sit here."
Tobias sat very still on the far bench.
Finnegan's jaw had gone tight.
I picked up the bottle.
"Thank you for announcing it," I said. "I'd planned to tell everyone myself. That's all right."
I turned to the camera.
It was strange how small my voice sounded out there on the water.
"I'm nine weeks pregnant," I said. "My husband and I tried for four years. This bottle is real. My doctor wrote it in June, and I filled it myself at a pharmacy across town. I stopped taking it the day I took the test."
