Chapter 7: The Refill

Brynn showed up at my sister's door on Thursday with a thermos of chicken soup and a bag of clementines.

Joanna was at work, and I was alone in her apartment in my socks.

I almost didn't open the door.

"I know you're in there," Brynn called through it. "I can see your shadow. Sam, I'm just going to stand here holding soup until my arms fall off."

I opened the door.

She looked terrible.

Her eyes were swollen and she wasn't wearing makeup, and her blonde hair was in a knot on top of her head.

She held out the thermos with both hands.

"I'm not here to fight," she said. "I'm here to apologize properly. May I come in?"

I stood aside.

She set the soup on Joanna's counter, found bowls on the second try, and poured two without asking.

Then she sat down at the little table and put both hands flat on it.

"I was a coward at the gala," she said. "Tobias told me he'd put the lot up as a surprise. I thought it was sweet. I didn't know you'd see the card and not be told. When I saw your face, I wanted to melt into the floor."

"You bid twenty-five thousand dollars."

"I bid because I panicked. I'm a pharmacist, Sam. I haven't got twenty-five thousand dollars."

She laughed, and it wobbled.

"He said put it on the joint account, and I said fine. I'm an idiot who agrees with whoever is nearest. I'll pay every cent back."

It was almost funny.

It was also exactly how she had always been, so quick to take the blame that nobody else got a turn at it.

"Where's Tobias?" I said.
