Chapter 7: Sunday Dinner

Shelby was sitting in my chair at Dorothy's table.

It was the one with the cushion I had sewn, third from the left, facing the window.

I stood in the dining room doorway holding an apple pie, and nobody had the manners to look embarrassed.

"Althea, sit by Padraig," Dorothy said. "We've made a place."

"Thanks," I said.

I set the pie on the sideboard.

Jo came in behind me in her work jacket, straight off a shift, and took the seat across from Shelby.

"Hungry?" she said to her pleasantly. "You look hungry."

Padraig sat down on my other side.

He had come early, and he had not told his mother why.

Under the table his boot knocked once against mine, steady, and stayed there.

The roast was dry and the potatoes were good.

For twenty minutes everyone talked about the weather and the church bake sale.

Then Dorothy laid her fork across her plate.

"Althea, we are all family here. Travis has told me what he wants, and I think it's fair. A short apology to Shelby, and we put the airport behind us."

"I want to say something first," I said.

"Of course."

"Dorothy, in my kitchen last Saturday you told me Travis had shown you a paper. From the clinic. About me."

"Althea, this is not the time."

"I'd like to see it."

Travis set down his glass.

"Mom doesn't have it," he said easily. "I only told her what the doctor said. It's all very private."

"But you showed her."
