Chapter 20: The Last Night
Torvald had stood in the yard for a quarter of an hour with the iron box on his hip, smiling, and said only what he had come to say.
He would be at the fair.
The box would be on the table in front of him.
Erlend might come and bid, if he cared to, with every other man on the Lerwick shore to watch him do it.
Then he had gone down to his boat, whistling, and Erlend had stood where he was with his hands open at his sides, and had not touched him.
That was the whole of it.
I took Erlend up the stair by the wrist.
He let me.
The Hall was empty, the housekeeper gone to her sister's and the station men at the Lerwick pier with the boats.
The light was the grey-gold light of eleven at night in July, and it lay across his bed through the long window.
I shut the door.
I turned the key in the lock on the inside.
He looked at the key, and I put it on the table, and turned it back.
"Tonight," I said, "you will not wait to be told."
His eyes came up to mine.
"Tonight I'm telling you everything," I said. "I want you to take all of it. I want you to do what you want."
"Danika."
"I've handed it to you. I'll not take it back till morning."
I saw him swallow.
I saw him understand, slowly, all that was in it.
He had waited eight months for me to say where his hands should go.
I was handing him the whole of it, my body and the rest, and every part of it was to be his to decide.
"You'll stop me," he said, "if I go too far."
"I'll tell you nothing," I said. "That's what I'm giving you."
