Chapter 8: Keep Your Hands Where You Put Them
Danika's POV
I heard them in the barrel yard before I saw them.
It was a grey afternoon with a thin rain, and I had come down from the counting house with a bill for the cooper, and I stopped at the corner of the stack.
Torvald's voice was low and easy and carried the way a reasonable voice does.
"I'm only saying, Erlend. She has her father's eyes."
"She has her own," Erlend said.
"She has Magnus Isbister's eyes, and his mouth, and his way of saying a figure as if it were gospel," Torvald said. "I watched her at the book. She knows where every shilling is."
"It's her work," Erlend said.
"Is it? Or is it that she knows what she wants out of you?" Torvald said.
I put my hand flat against the cold barrel.
I did not move.
"You've not let a soul near you in fourteen years," Torvald said. "Now an Isbister walks into your house and you're a lamb. You think I'm not frightened for you? I'm your brother. I only ask what she's gained."
"She's gained nothing."
"She's gained your bed."
There was a silence, and I heard rain on the planks.
"That is not your concern," Erlend said.
"Everything about you is my concern. I put you on that boat. I fetched you off the quay at Leith when you were nineteen and could not stand to be touched by your own brother. I've held your hand for sixteen years, Erlend, and I'll not see it taken by the daughter of the man who killed our mother."
I heard Erlend draw a breath.
