Chapter 12: The Line
By seven o'clock on Saturday the wind was shaking the whole dock.
The floating homes groaned on their moorings, and the lake slapped the hulls in short hard waves.
The driver would not stop for me at the gate.
He left me at the top of the walk with an umbrella that turned inside out in the first gust.
I ran the last forty feet with my coat over my head.
The cabin was warm and black and loud.
The shutters boomed with every gust, and the house rocked on its lines with a long creak.
I stood at the foot of the stair with my hair streaming and my heart pounding.
"I told them to tell you to stay home," he said.
His voice came out of the dark by the bed.
"I know," I said.
"It's going to get worse."
"Then I'm in the right place," I said.
He crossed the floor in three strides and caught me by the face.
The kiss was wild and cold-mouthed and desperate, and I climbed his body with my hands in his wet coat.
"You're soaked," he said against my lips.
"Take it off me."
He stripped me down in the dark, fast, with a kind of fury.
My coat hit the floor, and then my sweater.
