Chapter 15: The Light

Astrid's POV

"Stand there," I said. "In the middle. Under the lamp."

I had knocked at the door of the house at seven, because I had thrown the key in the lake.

He had opened it and said nothing at all.

Now every lamp in the cabin was lit.

He had unbarred the shutters on the two long windows, and the black lake stood in the glass with the dock lights lying on it.

I sat on the edge of the bed with my coat on and looked at him for the first time in my life.

He stood barefoot on the boards in his jeans and a gray shirt, and the light showed me everything.

"Take the shirt off," I said.

He pulled it over his head with his left hand, and the bracelet slid on his wrist.

He was long and lean.

Dark hair ran across his chest and went gray near the center, and a ridge of muscle lay down each side of his stomach.

The scar ran along his right ribs, paler than the skin, from under his arm almost to the hip.

I had traced it with my tongue in the dark.

It was longer than I had thought.

"Jeans," I said.

He undid the button, and the zipper rasped, and he pushed them down and stepped out.

He was already hard.

I had held him and taken him in my mouth.

I had him inside me on a dozen nights, and I had never seen him.

He was thick and long and darker at the head, and he curved up toward his stomach.

A bead of wet shone at the tip under the lamp.

He stood still and let me look, and color came up his throat to his jaw.

"You're blushing," I said.

"You've been staring for a while."

"I'm not done."

I got up and walked around him slowly.

His back was broad, with a mole low on the left shoulder blade.

I put my palm flat on the scar, and I felt his ribs jump.

"I hate you," I said.

"I know," he said.

"I spat on your shoes in front of two hundred people," I said.

"You'd lost your father," he said.

"And you stood there and took it. You never said a word."

"What was there to say?" he said.

I came around in front of him and hit him.

It was an open hand across the face, and the crack of it went around the cabin.
