Chapter 13: The Wall
The last truck went down the lane with its taillights smoking, and I turned on him in the kitchen.
He had pulled his jeans on in the yard.
That was all he wore.
Snow was melting in his beard, and he stood in the doorway with his hands open at his sides, waiting for me to hit him.
I hit him.
I put both palms flat on his bare chest and shoved, and he went back a step and no more.
He did not move.
"You let me think I was losing my nose," I said.
"Talya."
"Nine nights I put my face on you and got nothing."
I shoved again.
"I lay awake wondering if my grandmother's work had died in my head, and you knew."
"I knew," he said.
"You knew, and you said, you're fine, you're perfect, and you kissed me."
"I did."
"Don't just stand there and take it!" I shouted.
"What do you want me to do?" he said.
His voice was rough.
His eyes had gone dark and wide, and the fear had not left them, though the wolves had.
I took his face in both hands and dragged his mouth down to mine.
I kissed him hard enough to bruise.
He made a sound in his chest and caught me under the thighs and lifted me off the floor.
My back hit the kitchen wall beside the stove.
The whole wall shook, and a pan fell off its nail.
"Yes," I said into his mouth. "Like that."
"You're still angry."
"I'm furious. Take my sweater off."
He took hold of the hem and dragged it up over my head, and my hair came with it in a dark rush.
I wore nothing under it.
The cold air and the heat of his eyes hit my breasts together, and my nipples went hard.
He bent and took one in his mouth, and I cried out and drove my fingers into his hair.
He sucked, and scraped it gently with his teeth, and moved to the other.
"Axel."
"Mm."
"More," I said.
"You said you were furious."
"I am," I said. "Use your mouth on me anyway."
He did, until my knees were weak and I was grinding against his thigh.
