Chapter 15: Dawn Over the Lake

In the last week of January the sun came up over the lake at half past nine.

I was already awake and standing over him.

We had been in the cabin for twenty-four days.

I knew every plank of the floor.

I knew he made coffee with his left hand and stirred with his right.

I knew he sang to the woodstove when he thought I was asleep.

I knew his body in the dark better than I had ever known my own.

That morning I woke in the pine-smelling gray before light, with his arm over my waist and his cock hard against my back.

I slid out from under his arm.

He mumbled my name.

I took his hand and pulled him out of the bed we had rebuilt, and led him naked across the cold rug to the window.

The old rocking chair sat in front of the glass.

"Sit," I said.

"Talya, it's freezing."

"You're a bear. Sit."

He sat.

The chair creaked under him, and he looked up at me with his hair on end and his eyes half closed.

The gray was turning gold over the far shore.

I stood in front of him and looked down at the whole broad, bare, warm length of him, and my mouth watered.

"Hold the arms," I said.

He took hold of the chair arms.

I knelt on the rug between his knees and took his cock in my hand.

It was thick and heavy and already damp at the tip.

I licked it once, slowly, root to head, and tasted salt.

He hissed, and his hips jerked.

"Stay still."

"That's not fair," he said.

"I know."

I took the head into my mouth and swirled my tongue around it, and he swore, softly and often.

I did not take him deep.

I only wanted him wet, and aching, and breathing hard.

I pulled off with a slick sound.

"Now," I said.

I stood up and turned my back to him.
