Chapter 18: The Sleep
Axel's POV
The sleep came for me the evening after the shack, while I was washing a pot.
I felt it first in my hands.
They went heavy and slow, and the pot slid back into the water, and I stood at the sink and thought, not now.
Not tonight.
Not with the Naming at sundown tomorrow.
Not with a woman in my cabin who had never once asked me to be less than I was.
Every winter since I was fourteen I had gone down in the first week of December, and slept until the ground thawed.
This year the sleep had waited seven weeks.
It had waited for her, I thought.
Now it was coming in all at once, and I was afraid.
"Axel?"
Talya stood in the loft ladder, wrapped in the quilt, with her hair loose.
"You've gone gray," she said.
"I'm tired."
"You're not tired. You're going under."
She came down the ladder and across the floor, and took the pot out of the sink, and set it on the rack.
She put both hands on my face.
Her palms were warm and her eyes were steady.
"How long does it take?" she said.
"Hours. It starts in the hands."
"And then?" she said.
"Then I don't wake till March."
"That's not true anymore," she said.
