Chapter 9: Take Him

The text from Ou Jin arrived at 11:51, and it said only: Mr. Qin's office. Now.

Mingzhou read it in the back of the grey car with his shirt buttoned wrong and his hair still damp from the shower he hadn't had.

He had woken alone at nine, in a bed that smelled of two people.

He had lain there for a full minute with his hand on the warm place beside him.

Then the phone had buzzed.

He didn't remember the elevator.

He remembered the long carpeted corridor on the top floor of Qin Tower.

There was an empty secretary's chair, and a door left open an inch.

Voices came through the gap.

One of them was soft and pleasant.

"I'd never come between a husband and wife," Fang was saying. "But you must see how it looks, Mr. Qin."

"A young man married off for a debt," Fang went on. "Of course he turned to someone."

Mingzhou stopped dead outside the door.

"Turned to you," said Yuheng.

"To the person who listened," Fang said.

"And you listened."

"I love him."

The word fell into the office and lay there.

Mingzhou pressed his back against the glass wall and closed his eyes.

It was a lie, and a good one.

He had heard the same sweetness two days ago, over a bowl of noodles, while Fang slid a deed across the table.

"I'm not asking for much," Fang went on. "I'd settle the debt myself. My label has funds. If you released him, quietly, in six months, no one would be hurt."

A long pause.

Mingzhou held his breath.

Then Yuheng's voice came, very even.

"Then take him."

Mingzhou's eyes flew open.
