Chapter 30: The Duchess's Hall
The banquet was held in the Great Hall that same night, and every table was set with the Keep's best pewter.
Forty northern lords sat down to the long boards, and this time most of them sat facing the dais.
Thessaly came in on Eskil's arm in a gown of deep blue, with her hair loose to her shoulders, and the Hall rose.
She noticed that nobody waited to see whether anyone else would stand first.
The old lord of Ashfell proposed the first toast, as was his right.
"To the Duchess," he growled, "who reads the plans."
"The Duchess!" the Hall roared.
Corvin gave the second, in a speech so long that Nerissa put her head on the table, and so sincere that by the end half the lords were blowing their noses.
The young lord of the east wing contributed a ballad about a goat, which was received with enormous enthusiasm.
A look from Nerissa that he nearly dropped his cup over.
Thessaly laughed until her ribs hurt.
It was the happiest she had ever been in that Hall, and she had sat in it with soot on her sleeve.
