Chapter 21: The Porch
"May I come in?" Ingrid said.
"No."
"Then may I say it standing here?"
The porch light made her look every one of her sixty-one years.
I leaned on the doorframe.
Bev stood behind me in the hall with her arms crossed.
"Say it."
"My husband died on that floor," Ingrid said.
"On the oncology floor. Eleven years ago, when Dane was twenty-two."
"I know."
"Then you know what it was to walk back down that same hall six years ago, for my son."
She looked down at the folder.
"When the nurse told me Dane had a match, I thought God had given something back."
"And then I stood in that hall and saw a girl in a denim jacket with flour on her sleeve, and I did the arithmetic."
"What arithmetic?"
"A boy who owes his life to a girl does not belong to his mother anymore."
"He belongs to his debt."
