Chapter 18: Goodbye as a Husband

Tripp knocked on my door at nine that night.

Two soft taps, the kind he used on a closed office.

Joanna was sitting cross-legged on my white bed with her phone in her lap, and she looked up at me and mouthed, now?

I nodded.

She pressed the red button, laid the phone face up on the quilt, and put a pillow over it with the microphone showing.

I kept my own phone recording in my hand, behind my back.

"Shelly?" Tripp said through the wood. "Are you in?"

"I'm in."

"May I come in?"

"No," I said. "I'm tired."

There was a pause in which I could hear him deciding to be patient.

"All right. I won't push." His voice was warm and even. "I wanted to say goodbye, as a husband, while we're still one."

"Goodbye?"

"Tomorrow is going to be a difficult day, and I'd like you to know I don't hate you."

My sister lifted her eyebrows to her hairline.

"Why would tomorrow be difficult?" I asked.

"Because of what I have to do, Shelly. I'd rather say it to your face, but I think you'd rather I didn't." He sighed. "The photograph came this afternoon."

I leaned my forehead against the door.

"What photograph?"

"The one I asked for. You were wearing the green dress, I think. His hands were in your hair." A faint dry sound, which was Tripp smiling. "It's good work. Prendergast's worth every cent."
