"The clause is real," the grey-haired partner repeated. "I heard you, Mr. Draycott."

She rose from her chair without hurry.

"I also heard you say you arranged for your wife to be photographed so you could take her shares. That is not a clause. That is a plan, and it's on tape."

"A private matter," Tripp said. "Between spouses."

"It is a matter between you and a company I was about to pay four hundred million dollars for." She turned to her two colleagues, who both nodded. "Halvorsen doesn't buy a company when its chief executive is conspiring against a thirty percent holder. The title would be in court for years."

The terrace was so quiet I could hear the lanterns swinging on their wires.

"Then it can't be sold," Tripp said.

"It can," said the woman. "If the right people agree."

She looked at me.

"Mrs. Draycott. As I understand it, the sale needs eighty percent of the shares. Mr. Draycott holds forty-five. His mother holds twenty-five."

"Yes."

"That is seventy."

"Yes," I said. "I hold the other thirty."

Tripp took a step toward me, and Joanna moved smoothly into the gap.

"Shelly," he said. "Think what you're doing. That's your grandmother's money. You said it yourself, it belongs to the work."

"It does," I said. "That's why he doesn't get to keep it."

"I'll make this right. Tonight. Whatever you want."

"I want three things."

I held up one finger, the way he had on the other side of my door.
