Chapter 21: Void
The family courtroom on Friday was bigger than the beige room where Inez had tried to take my name away.
There were rows of pews, high windows, and a clerk with a stack of folders.
Bridget sat in the front row in her best cardigan, with Toby beside her.
Ethan had the aisle seat.
He had come straight from a night shift, and his jaw was gray with stubble.
I had told him not to.
He had said he would be there and had sat down.
I wore the navy dress.
I had not planned to.
It was the dress I had worn when I walked out of that dinner, and I had pulled it from the bottom of Bridget's closet that morning and decided it was mine.
Tristram sat at the other table in a gray suit with his lawyer.
He had lost weight in a week.
When I came in, he stood.
The judge was a wiry man with a quiet voice.
"We're here on the petition for dissolution, and on a motion by the respondent to set aside the premarital agreement. Counsel."
Tristram's lawyer rose.
"Your Honor, my client stipulates that the agreement was procured under circumstances he now understands to have been fraudulent. He does not contest the grounds for divorce. He asks that the 'for cause' clause be struck in its entirety, and he offers the following."
He handed up a paper.
The judge read it.
He read it a second time, and he looked at Tristram over the top of it.
"Mr. Nordin, you're proposing to transfer the marital home to your wife outright, and half of your interest in the firm."
