Chapter 11: Terms
Kelsey left Marconi's in the red dress with her lipstick smeared, and nobody tried to stop her.
The door swung shut behind her, and the bell above it jingled.
Hank's wife was the first to move.
She cut the cake into twelve even slices and put one in front of me.
"Eat," she said. "Then you two go outside and say the rest of it."
I ate the slice.
It was the best cake I had ever tasted, and I could not have told you the flavor.
Afterwards Floyd and I stood on the sidewalk under the awning, with the traffic hissing past on the wet street.
He had not said a word since the restaurant.
"Fourteen thousand dollars," he said at last.
"I heard her."
"I'll pay it back. It's mine to pay. I swear that doesn't come from you."
"It doesn't come from me because I'm not paying anything else," I said. "Floyd, answer one thing. Honestly."
"Anything."
"Three years ago, at the kitchen table. You cried and begged me never to take a second job. That was long before the surgeries. It had nothing to do with insurance."
He didn't answer for a moment.
A bus went by, and its lights crossed his face.
"No," he said. "It didn't."
"Then why?"
"Because I couldn't stand it." His voice was rough. "You came home at six every night with your feet aching, and you still wanted to take a night shift at the bakery. I was lying on a couch I couldn't see. I thought if you took one more job, there'd be no room left in your life for me. And I wanted so badly to be somebody who gave you something."
