Chapter 15: Group Chat
Brinley's POV
The photo had four hundred and twelve reactions by the time I opened it.
I was at Hank's kitchen table with a mug of tea going cold, and his wife stood at the stove pretending to stir.
Kelsey's face against Floyd's cheek.
His eyes closed.
His hand on her waist.
The caption said: Brinley's boyfriend, April. Ask who's been lying to who.
Under it, three hundred people I worked with had written things.
Some were kind.
Most were not.
A man from underwriting had typed a single eyeball emoji.
I put the phone face down.
"Do you want me to say something?" Hank's wife asked.
"No."
"Do you want me to throw the phone in the soup?"
I laughed, and it came out as a cough.
"Not yet."
The back door opened, and Floyd came in with cold on his jacket and three printed pages in his fist.
He did not say hello.
He put the pages on the table, and he stood with his hands open at his sides.
"I saw it," he said. "She was waiting in the clinic lot. She showed me before she sent it. My hand is on her waist because I was pushing her back into her seat."
"I know."
"I was going to tell you it was a second. She counted it. I should have told you it was a second in April, and I should have told you the camera existed."
"Did you know about the camera?"
"No."
"Then you couldn't have told me."
He stared at me.
"You told me the kiss in the bakery," I said. "Before I could find out any other way. You told me today, within the hour, and you showed up here with paper in your hand. I'm not going to pretend I can't tell the difference."
He made a sound I had not heard from him before.
Hank's wife put the spoon down and left the room, and Hank, who had been in the doorway, went with her.
I stood up.
"Come home with me," I said.
"Brinley."
"Dearborn. Now."
We took the bus, because neither of us trusted the other to hold a steering wheel.
He sat close to me on the long seat and kept his thigh against mine, and we did not say a word.
