Chapter 11: The Dumpster
Giovanni turned around and walked out of the shed.
The pull dragged me after him onto the gravel.
He stood by the fence with his back to all of us.
The wind was coming off the bay, and it pushed at his coat.
After a while my father came out and stood a few feet away from him.
"You know who it is," my father said.
"Yes."
"Say it."
"Not here." Giovanni's voice was flat.
"Not to a boatyard. Tomorrow night there are two hundred people who stood at my wedding and never learned her name."
"I'll say it to them."
My father looked at him for a long time.
"If you let her walk out of this," he said, "I'll do it myself. I'm sixty-one. I don't care."
"She won't walk out."
Nunzio kept Kasza in the shed with two men on the door.
We drove back across the bridge in the dark.
In the morning a green dumpster was sitting on the driveway.
I saw it from the guest room window where Giovanni had slept in the chair again.
