Chapter 14: Her Phone
Nobody in the room breathed.
Then somebody's fork hit a plate.
A woman near the front said, "Madonna," and put her hand over her mouth.
Serafina looked up at him with her lips parted.
"Gio," she said quietly. "Sit down. You're upset. Sit down."
He didn't look at her.
"Someone took her from the gravel lot behind the lumber yard last Friday night," he said to the room.
"They kept her in a shed in East Providence for three days. They broke her hands. Her hands. She carved things."
His voice stayed level.
"They did the rest so I wouldn't know her. And I didn't."
"While she was lying in my warehouse, I texted her to sign the divorce papers."
He took his phone out and held it up.
"And somebody answered me. From her phone. Wednesday morning. 'Fine. I'll sign. Don't look for me.'"
"And again tonight. At seven o'clock. 'I'm in Florida. Tell my dad I'm fine.'"
My father stood up at the back.
"She's been dead since Monday," my father said, loud and rough. "Who's writing to me?"
Giovanni looked down at his phone.
