Chapter 9: Pasta Alla Norma
Giovanni held the phone to his ear.
"Say it again."
"The DNA on the hairbrush matches the body. I had them run it twice." Luca stopped. "I'm sorry, Gio."
"And the baby."
"The baby was yours. I asked them to check against your sample from last year's physical."
Giovanni put the phone down on the nightstand.
He didn't hang up. I could still hear Luca saying his name, small and far away.
He sat on the edge of my bed with his hands on his knees.
Then he got up and went downstairs.
I followed him into the kitchen.
Teresa was at the sink. She turned around when she heard him and saw his face and put the plate down.
He went to the fridge.
My notes were still stuck on the door under a magnet shaped like a lemon.
"Teresa, the plumber comes Tues. Please let him in. Thank you! Love, L."
"Teresa, I took the last eggs, I'm sorry, I'll get more. Love, L."
