Chapter 17: Gladstone Boulevard
The driver closed the door on my mother without a word and walked around to the front of the Lincoln.
He drove out of the lot at the speed limit.
Aurelio ran for the truck.
I ran after him and got the passenger door open as he turned the key.
We followed the red taillights down the old highway toward Kansas City with nothing in the cab but his breathing.
"He won't hurt her," Aurelio said, once. "He doesn't do that. He never has."
"You don't know that."
"I know him."
"You thought you did," I said, and then I was sorry, because his hands were white on the wheel.
The Lincoln went north on Gladstone Boulevard under the old elms.
It turned in at a tall iron gate.
The house was big and brick, on a hill, with a slate roof and lights in every window.
I had never seen it.
Aurelio pulled the truck to the curb a block away.
"Stay here," he said. "Lock the doors. If I'm not out in thirty minutes, call the number on this card and say your name."
He put a thick white card in my hand with a phone number in pen.
"Whose number?" I said.
"Cosima's. It's a real one."
"Aurelio. Don't sit down."
He looked at me.
"Whatever he says," I said. "Don't sit."
He kissed me, short and fierce, and got out of the truck.
I watched him walk up the long sidewalk in his good coat with his hands open at his sides.
He did not look back.
He went through the iron gate and up the stone steps and rang the bell like a visitor.
The door opened.
A man took his coat.
I did not breathe until the door shut behind him.
I sat in the dark with the engine ticking.
I watched the minutes pass on the dashboard clock, with my hand on my stomach and the card in my fist.
At nineteen minutes the front door opened again.
