Chapter 21: The Sunday Table
We went in by the front door of the restaurant, at ten minutes to two.
Nobody had told the two men on the sidewalk to stop us, so they did not.
They looked at Aurelio, and at my mother in her church coat, and at me in my blue dress with my braid down my back and my belly out in front of me.
They looked at each other.
One of them held the door.
The long table in the back room was set for thirty-one.
The cloth was white and the plates were gold-rimmed, and in front of every chair stood a glass of red wine.
Thirty-one men sat at it, in dark suits, with their hands on the linen.
I knew some of the faces from the Sunday in March.
I knew the waiter by the wall, who held a tray and did not look at me.
At the head of the table, in the tall carved chair, there was nobody.
It stood empty with its back to the window, and the light fell around it.
At the foot, where the old man always sat, Gaetano Candela had a roast in front of him and a knife in his hand.
He was in his gray cardigan, under his good jacket.
He looked up at us with a soft, pleasant, interested smile, as if we were late guests he was glad to see.
Beside him, three seats down, sat the visitor from Chicago.
He had his camel coat folded on the chair next to him.
He did not smile.
"Nephew," Gaetano said gently. "You are late. Sit down. Your guests will sit also."
Nobody moved.
I felt my mother's hand close on my elbow.
