Chapter 13: Proxy

I played the voicemail once, and Caleb heard all of it from the couch.

He had pulled on his jeans and was sitting with his elbows on his knees.

"Ten o'clock," he said. "He's moved it up so you can't prepare."

"He thinks I'm still deciding whether to sign."

"Are you?"

I looked at him.

I was standing in the gray light in my navy dress with the zipper undone down my back, and I had never felt less like a woman who was deciding.

"I'm going to walk into that room with the deed," I said. "I'm going to put it on the table in front of the chairman."

He nodded slowly.

"And then he'll have the proxy anyway," Caleb said. "Camille will have signed it for you. She's had three years of your handwriting on those pages."

"I know."

"So you need her to say so out loud."

"I know that too."

I turned my back to him, and he stood and drew the zipper up, one slow inch at a time.

His knuckles stopped between my shoulder blades.

"I have to ask you something," he said. "And I want the true answer."

"Ask."

"When you read that deed, did you think about going back?"

I turned around.

"To Landon?"

"To the house, the money, the quiet life for Max." He said it evenly. "A boy with that kind of future doesn't have to live above a dry cleaner. I'd understand it. I wouldn't like it."

I stared at him.

"You thought I'd go back to him for the money."
