Chapter 24: Thursday
On Thursday I got to the soup place at ten to seven, which was early, and found Lydia already there.
She sat at the table by the radiator with her hands folded and a candle lit in a jar.
She was not wearing a pale-blue formal dress but a gray sweater and jeans.
Her hair was in a braid that had given up halfway down.
"You're early," I said.
"I've been early here since September," Lydia said. "I'm very good at it."
The man behind the counter lifted a ladle in greeting.
"Your usual table," the man said. "Two bowls. Sit."
"I'm going to sit," I said.
"Both bowls," the man said, and gave me a long, meaningful look.
"I'll eat both of mine," I said.
"I'm talking to her," the man said.
Lydia laughed, and the tooth showed, and she left it where it was.
I took the white tent card out of my jacket and stood it on the table by the candle.
The bowls came out fast, the same lentil soup, with a heel of bread in each.
"Reserved," the man said, and took the white tent card from the table.
