Chapter 22: The Porch

I didn't open the door.

I put my grandmother's sheet of music on the hall table, face down.

Then I went to Benji's room.

He was asleep on his back with his arms flung over his head and Plates under one knee.

Ollie was sitting on the floor beside the bed. He'd heard the cars.

"Stay here," I whispered. "Whatever happens, he doesn't come out."

"Fee."

"Call the lawyer. Put her on speaker."

He was already dialing.

I went back to the front door, opened it, stepped out onto my own porch and pulled it shut behind me.

The porch light was on. The street was not empty.

Across the road, my neighbour had stopped watering his azaleas and was standing there with the hose running on his shoes.

Two doors down, a woman with a dog had come out to see the lights.

The deputy was young and tired and polite.

"Ma'am. Are you Felicity Dunagan?"

"Yes."

"Ms. Grimball here says she has a right to collect a minor child from this address for a work commitment tomorrow morning."

"She doesn't."
