Chapter 17: Need
The woman from Student Conduct had a folder, a box of tissues and a very kind face.
On Monday at ten she laid the Landry complaint on the table between us and slid it toward me with two fingers.
"I want to be fair to you," she said. "The family office says you've been harassing a young woman with a panic disorder. They've sent sixteen pages."
I had prepared for this meeting for four days.
I had a folder of my own.
It had the group-chat receipt, the dinner timeline, a list of every call Dylan had made, and the courier slip for the agreement I never signed.
I opened it and she raised a hand.
"Before you do. Someone is here who wants to speak first."
The door opened.
Piper came in with her hair brushed, wearing a clean sweatshirt with no chip in it.
Owen stood behind her in the corridor and did not come in.
"Hi," Piper said. "I'm the young woman."
The conduct officer blinked.
"Miss Landry. Thank you for coming. Do you want a chair?"
"I'd like to read something. It's short."
She unfolded a sheet.
Her hands shook, and the page rattled, and she read it anyway.
"My name is Piper Landry. I'm the person in this complaint. I did not write it and I did not see it before it was sent. Corinne Ashdown has not contacted me against my wishes. I contacted her. She sat with me when I couldn't breathe, and she told me the truth when no one else would. If anyone should be investigated, it is the people who file complaints in my name."
She looked up.
"That's all. I signed it. I'm twenty-two, I signed it, and I can sign things."
