At five o'clock on Friday, Hallie stood behind my chair with a stopwatch on her phone.

"Four fifty-nine," she said.

I had the banking app open on the desk.

The balance said zero.

"Five," she said. "Zero zero."

I refreshed it once.

Zero.

Hallie said, "Do it."

I had written the message the night before and deleted it eleven times.

This version was short.

It went to the group chat with all fourteen people from the farewell dinner, and I attached the transfer record.

Dylan took the $6,200 we saved for our London flat and spent it on his housing in Arizona. I asked for it back by 5 p.m. today. I'm not fighting about why he's going. I'm asking for my money. Corinne.

I pressed send.

Then I put the phone face down on the desk and ate a cold fry.

It took ninety seconds for the first reply.

At 5:40 he texted: You humiliated me in front of everyone. After everything I'm doing.

I read it once and did not reply.

At 6:15, one more: Money's coming. Stop being dramatic.
