Chapter 15: Friday at the Bank

Annie's POV

I pulled my father's deposit slip from the spring at ten o'clock on Friday, and I read the account number twice.

It was not Constance Kell's name.

It was Kell Cattle & Feed, operating account, and the memo line said "feed and payroll."

Boone read it over my shoulder, and I felt him breathe out.

"That's it," he said.

"That's it."

"What do you want to do?"

"I want to be early," I said.

We were at the bank at eleven-thirty.

It was Friday, and the lobby was full of ranchers and farm wives with deposit bags, standing in a line that went to the door.

The bank manager came out of his office, and he saw my face and said, "Ms. Sorley, I was about to call you."

"Why?"

"Mrs. Kell phoned. She's coming at noon with her lawyer to collect on your father's note."

"Good," I said. "Then we'll wait."

At five to twelve, the front doors opened.

Constance came in first, in a navy suit and her pearls.

Her lawyer walked at her shoulder, and Mr. Kell walked behind them, grey in the face.

Austin came last, with his hands in his pockets.

The line turned around to watch.

"Ray's daughter," Constance said pleasantly. "How nice. I wondered if you'd come to settle."

"I came to read something."

"I can't imagine what."

"Neither could I, until yesterday."

I held up my father's deposit slip.

"Last spring my father received a cheque for nine hundred thousand dollars," I said. "You told everyone it was your own money. You said you were doing us a kindness."

"I did."

"Then why does the slip say Kell Cattle & Feed operating account?"
