Chapter 4: The Note

On Monday morning I unlocked the front door of Haldane & Daughter at seven and turned the sign to open.

The store smelled like cut keys and cedar, the way it had every morning of my life.

My father was already in the back, restocking the bolt bins with his glasses pushed up on his forehead.

"You didn't have to come in," he said. "You've got fittings and flowers and everything."

"I'd rather be here."

He gave me a look, then went back to the bolts.

I opened the mail at the register.

There was a gas bill, a seed catalog and a cream envelope with the Greaves Lumber crest in the corner.

My hands went cold before I opened it.

It was one page from Constance's lawyer, written in a polite voice.

It said the loan on the store would become due in full, three hundred and eighty thousand dollars, on the date the engagement between Preston Greaves and Margot Haldane was ended by either party.

It said the family hoped this would never be needed.

I read it twice.

Then I folded it into my back pocket, because my father could not see it.

"Margot?" he called. "Did the delivery come?"

"Not yet, Dad."

The bell over the door rang at nine.

Dominic stood in the doorway in jeans and the black jacket, with the morning sun behind him.

I put both hands flat on the counter.

"We're not open to best men," I said.

"I need nails."

"For what?"
