Chapter 30: Her Mother's Kitchen

My aunt's kitchen smelled of coffee and burned toast on Sunday morning.

It had a yellow table with a plastic cloth, six chairs that did not match, and a cross-stitch on the wall that said Bless This Mess.

I sat on one side of it with Alec next to me.

Candace sat on the other, in the same black dress, with her hands flat on the cloth.

She had not slept. Neither had any of us.

Two people in dark windbreakers sat at the end of the table with a recorder between them.

They were from the state, from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and they had come through the door at six with a warrant for Clint's truck and a copy of everything.

"Ms. Moyer has given us a full statement," the woman said. "The original recording is in our evidence room."

"And Clint?" I asked.

"Held without bail. He asked for a lawyer before we asked him a question."

"The county prosecutor withdrew the pistol charge against Mr. McFadden at seven this morning. The sheriff has called to say he's stepping down."

Alec's shoulders dropped beside me.

"The recording," he said. "My voice is on it."

"It is."

"I held that door."

The woman looked at him for a moment.

"Mr. Toland, we have your account. And we have Deputy Holzer on a live microphone saying that you did not know what the door was for."

"He used a young man who thought he was doing a favor. We charge the man who did the killing."

Alec put both hands over his face, and I put my arm around his shoulders.

He shook.

"You'll be a witness," the agent said. "You'll be asked hard questions on the stand. But you won't be sitting at the table."
