Chapter 15: The Rogue

"No," Thane said.

He said it to the envoy, flat, across the whole hall.

"Tell your Alpha the King's woman isn't on anybody's table."

The envoy bowed.

"I'll tell him the King said so."

He took his six men in long coats and walked out of Redfern's Moon Hall.

Maybe, by Redfern's law, he did.

I gave the twins to the nearest Redfern Luna, a stout woman who took them without a word and glared at Raine over their heads.

Then I let Thane walk me out into the cold.

He didn't let go of my neck until we reached the truck.

"Five nights," he said.

"I heard."

"He's out. He's finally out." His eyes were black at the edges. "He asked for you by name."

"He asked for the King's woman."

"Same thing."

"Then let's make him wait for her," I said. "Is the gray wolf still in your beta's truck?"

Thane looked at me for a long second.

Then he laughed, short and rough.

"Since four this morning," he said. "Chained to the spare tire and complaining."

The beta had found him in a hunting camp sixty miles south, living on canned beans.

I'd asked Thane to keep him until the right moment.
