Chapter 21: Not Today, Not Ever

Maggie's POV

The bell was heavier than it looked.

I pulled the cord with both hands, and the sound went through the floor and up my legs.

Three thousand people cheered on a screen somewhere.

Traders I had never met stood on their chairs and clapped.

For a moment I could not hear anything else.

Then the noise at the foot of the stage turned ugly.

Camille was still there, one shoe off, with the exchange guard's hand around her upper arm.

Phones were up all around her.

A reporter in a red scarf had pushed to the front with a microphone.

"Ms. Dray!" she called. "Ms. Dray, is it true you told Mr. Tamblyn the baby wasn't his?"

"Don't answer that," the guard said.

"Was there ever an engagement?"

Camille's head came up.

Her face had lost every soft thing it ever wore.

"I did it for him," she said, in a high thin voice. "I did all of it for him. Nobody else ever looked after him."

"No."

It was Russell.

He had come down the steps and stood at my shoulder, and he did not raise his voice.

"You did it for you, Camille," he said. "I let you tell me it was for me, because I didn't want to know."

"Russell."

"I'm not angry. I'm finished."

She tried to pull free of the guard.
