Chapter 11: The Pin

Haakon sat up behind me.

He didn't grab for the sheet. He didn't move his arm off my waist.

"Put the tray down, Freya," he said. "And close the door."

"You're sleeping with her."

Her voice climbed.

"With her. Two weeks before my mating. In Mama's bed."

"It's my bed. Your mother died twelve years ago."

"I know when she died!"

The coffee pot rattled on the tray in her hands.

"You walked into a man's bedroom without knocking," Haakon said. "You're twenty-two. Put it down and close the door."

Freya set the tray down on the floor, very carefully, right there in the doorway.

Then she looked at me.

I'd been looked at with hate before. Rune had looked at me with it on the cliff stairs.

This was worse. This was a girl who'd just found out she wasn't the only person her father loved.

"Enjoy it," she said to me. "It's the last thing in this house you'll get."

She left the door wide open behind her.

Haakon shook his head slowly.

"Well," he said. "That's done."

"She'll tell everyone."

"Let her."

She told everyone in an hour.

I came down to the hall at breakfast with my hair still wet and a fresh square of gauze on my neck.

The eleven visiting Alphas went quiet at their tables.

Freya was standing at the high table.

Rune sat beside her with a thick white bandage around his throat where Haakon's teeth had been.

His face was gray.

His eyes were not.

"There she is," Freya said, loud and bright.

"Everybody, look. Greyfir's old Luna. Ask her where she slept last night."

Nobody asked.
