Chapter 13: Marked
Freya didn't bow.
She stood in the white light under the glass with her chin up and my moonstone in her hair.
"No," she said.
It wasn't loud.
In that hall it didn't need to be.
"I won't bow to her. Not today. Not ever. She's the leftovers, Papa. She's Rune's leftovers, and you picked her up off his floor."
Four hundred wolves stayed on their knees and listened to the heir of Kingsfall insult its Luna.
Haakon didn't answer her.
He just looked at her, with his arm around my waist, and waited.
Freya's lip shook once.
Then she turned to Rune, still down on one knee beside the circle with his jaw locked.
"Get up," she told him. "We're leaving."
Rune got up.
He looked at me one more time, and it wasn't the look of a man who'd lost.
It was the look of a man doing arithmetic.
Then he took his new mate's hand, and they walked out through the kneeling hall together, her white skirt brushing past the bowed heads.
The doors banged shut behind them.
Nobody moved.
The old elder was still on one knee with his staff across his thigh, looking up at Haakon.
"Get up, all of you," Haakon said. "Drink. Eat. My mother ordered enough food for an army."
"I did," Solveig said, wiping her face. "Two armies. I was expecting a funeral."
Somebody laughed, and then everybody did, and the hall came back to life in one big roar.
Haakon didn't stay for it.
He bent down and put his arm under my knees and picked me up off the stone.
"Haakon," I said. "Your guests."
"Have food."
"The north is watching."
"Good. Let them watch."
He carried me up the step, past the two carved chairs, and out the side door, with the whole hall cheering at our backs.
Espen whistled through his fingers.
I hid my face in Haakon's neck, and I was laughing, and my wolf was howling, and I couldn't tell anymore which of us was which.
He took the tower stairs two at a time.
My heart was going so hard I could feel it in my teeth.
