Chapter 18: Luna's Right

"Nobody touch him," I said.

The Kingsfall healer was already shoving through the front row with her bag.

I let her through. Nobody else.

Haakon's eyes were open.

He was trying to say something, and his jaw wouldn't work.

Sweat stood out all over his face, and his skin was so hot it hurt to touch.

Through the bond in my chest I could feel him burning, a dull red roar.

I bent down close to his mouth.

Under the wine, under the copper, there was something else.

Bitter and green and wrong.

Every wolf learns that smell before they learn to read.

"Wolfsbane," I said.

The healer's head snapped up.

She leaned in and smelled it too, and her face went gray.

"How much did he drink?"

"Half the cup."

She swore and dug in her bag.

"He's big. He might live through half. He's not standing up today. Maybe not this week."

Somebody behind me was sobbing.

I looked around.

Freya was still on her knees at the edge of the circle where the cup had fallen.

She had both hands over her mouth, and her shoulders were shaking, and she looked like the most frightened girl in the north.
