Chapter 23: The Line

Haakon drove.

I told him he couldn't.

He told me it was his daughter, and his truck, and his line, and if I wanted to stop him I could sit on him.

I didn't sit on him.

I sat next to him in the cab with my hand on his knee, and Espen and six border warriors rode in the back.

The west line of Kingsfall was a river.

Shallow and brown and fast, with flat stones you could cross on in summer, and a row of old cedar posts on our side, each one marked with the Kingsfall wolf.

A dozen of our warriors were already standing along the bank.

On the far side, in the mud by the water, sat Rune and Freya.

Two days had done a lot.

Rune's beautiful hair was matted. His face was gray-green, his lips cracked, and he was holding his right arm against his chest.

Freya was worse.

She sat hunched in the same blue dress, wrapped in Rune's jacket, shaking so hard I could see it from the truck.

Dried blood still crusted her upper lip from the hall.

Packless sickness.

I'd watched it nearly kill my brother in one night.

They'd had two.

Haakon got out of the truck slowly.

He didn't go to the water.

He sat down on the tailgate, and folded his arms, and looked at me.

"Your call," he said.

"She's your daughter."

"She put you in the circle. You're the Luna." His jaw worked. "I'll stand behind what you do. Whatever it is."
