Chapter 23: The Lake Wedding
Cameron walked out to the black car in the clinic lot at dawn, in his socks and no coat, and tapped on the glass.
The window came down two inches.
"Is it a girl?" said Odette.
"It's Fern. She's eight pounds and she's furious."
"And Melanie?"
"She's asleep. She's well."
Odette looked straight ahead through the windshield.
"I'm not going to ask to come in," she said.
"I know."
"I want you to tell her that. I won't ask. I will wait to be asked."

Trudy gave me away in a lilac dress, with Fern asleep in a sling against her chest.
"Don't you cry on her," Trudy muttered as we walked. "She's just been fed."
The white-haired doctor stood at the end of the dock with a book, because it turned out she was also the county's justice of the peace.
Cameron waited in a plain gray suit.
His eyes were red before I got halfway.
"I'm keeping Whitacre," I told him when I reached him.
"I know."
