Chapter 14: Celia at the Water

Celia came to the creek alone, the night after the old Alpha called his challenge.

I saw her from the porch. She stood on the Ashfall bank in a pale coat with her braid over one shoulder, and she did not step into the water.

She raised one hand and waved.

"Don't," Tobias said behind me. "Let me send her off."

"She's asking for my say. Let her ask."

I went down the slope and stopped at the edge of the creek.

Tobias held at the top of the slope, for now. I could feel him there, a warm pull under my ribs.

"Dara," Celia said softly. "Thank you for coming down. I'm so sorry about all of it."

"Say what you came to say."

"I came to help you." She smiled. "I know the old Alpha. I know exactly what he does to people who stand in his way. Don't go to the stone, Dara."

"Is that the bargain?"

"Let him keep the seat. Take the cabin, take Cold Creek's man, and I'll make Dirk sign you a settlement." Her voice stayed sweet. "Real money. A house of your own. You walk away whole."

"And you stay at his right hand in the circlet."

"Someone has to."

"No," I said. "Someone doesn't."

The smile did not slip, but her eyes went flat.

"Then I'll tell the pack what I've been wanting to say for days. That you were on the drip when you got behind the wheel. That you asked me to drive because you were dizzy."

"I wasn't driving."

"Who says? I was hurt too, Dara. Who do they believe, the Beta's daughter or the girl who kept a whole pack's ledger and never told them she was the heir?"
