Chapter 11: The Safe
Lev's POV
I had stood outside this house for five years and had never once been inside the study.
Nika went down the stairs ahead of me with her hair coming out of its pins and blood on her sleeve from the birth.
She did not look back to see if I followed.
I followed.
The hall was empty.
The observer had left through the front door, and Tomasso's voice came from the kitchen at the back, low and pleased, speaking to someone on a phone.
We had perhaps three minutes.
The study door was unlocked.
It was a dark room with leather chairs, a wall of law books, and a long shelf of antique pistols behind glass.
I put my hand on the shelf's edge and it swung out on a hinge.
Behind it sat a grey steel safe, waist high.
A keypad, six digits.
"I can get it open," I said. "Not in three minutes."
"Try his mother's birthday."
I tried it.
The keypad flashed red.
"His own."
Red.
"Try mine," Nika said, behind me.
I tried it.
Red again.
I heard her breathe in.
"The first Thursday," she said slowly. "The day he came to my stall on Halsted. He bought a lemon tart and told me it was the best thing he'd ever eaten."
"Do you remember the date?"
"I've never forgotten it."
She said six numbers.
I pressed them.
The keypad turned green, and the heavy door swung open without a sound.
I did not look at her face, because I knew what would be in it.
Inside the safe were a stack of cash, a gun, a stack of deeds in a rubber band, and a thick brown folder.
Nika took the folder before I could.
She opened it on the desk under the green lamp.
On top lay a photograph of a young woman in a long dark coat, coming out of a door with a heavy iron handle.
