Chapter 16: The Ledger
The man from the Commission waited in the banya's front hall with his hat in his hands.
It was the observer, the one in the grey suit.
"Sunday at noon," he said. "Tomasso Greco lays an abduction charge against your father. You answer it."
"And if I bring him his own release?"
"Then the table hears you first." He put on his hat. "I would bring more than a file, Madam. The families don't love paper."
He left.
I went upstairs and took a small black book out of the bottom of my bag.
It was the book I had kept at my bakery stall, and then in the kitchen of the Greco house, for five years.
Lev saw it in my hand when I came down.
"What's that?"
"Every cake I ever made," I said. "Every funeral, every christening, every wedding. Who it was for. Who cried, and who didn't pay." I turned a page. "I never thought I'd need it."
He looked at me for a moment, and then he picked up his coat.
"Where are we going?"
"To Tomasso's mother's kitchen," I said. "It's Friday."
On Fridays, for five years, the Greco wives had made their sauce at her house.
They did it in a long kitchen with a plastic cloth on the table, and a wall of saints over the stove.
Today there were eight women in it.
They stopped talking when I came through the door.
Tomasso's mother sat at the head of the table with her cane across her knees.
"Sit," she said. "You're late."
"I didn't know I was expected."
"Everyone knows."
I sat.
Lev stayed by the door, with his hands folded in front of him and his eyes on the window.
Every woman in the room looked at him, and then at me.
The captain's wife from the gate was there, with her hands twisting in her apron.
