Chapter 5: What Alessia Was Told
"No," I told Alessia. "Nobody asked me anything."
She let go of my sleeve.
Behind her, the front door of the house opened and a Greco guard stepped out and called her name.
"Go back," I said. "Go in before he comes out."
"But then who..."
"Go."
She went, holding her belly with one hand and her loose hair with the other.
Lev opened the car door and I got in.
I didn't speak all the way to Archer Avenue, and he didn't either.
By ten o'clock that night I was on the roof of the banya in one of my father's old coats, because the room they had given me was the one I had slept in as a girl, and I could not stand it.
The tar paper was still warm from the day.
The city lay out below in the dark, orange and endless.
Lev was already there, sitting on an upturned crate by the roof door with a rifle case at his feet.
He stood up when he saw me.
"Sit," I said. "Please. I'm not your boss."
"You're the boss's daughter."
"Sit down, Lev."
He sat.
I took the other crate. For a while we watched a train go by on the far tracks, one of my father's.
"You keep the rifle up here?" I asked.
"On nights like this."
"Not on the street?"
"On the street I carried a camera."
I turned the ring on my finger. It still had a dried line of my blood on the inside.
"I want to ask you something," I said, "and I want you to answer without saying Fyodor Andreyevich told me."
He waited.
"You wrote it down. Every week. When he started coming home at three in the morning. When he started sleeping in the study." I kept my voice level. "When he took me to dinners and left me alone at the table."
