Chapter 11: Managing Member

I didn't open the gate right away.

"Why are you bringing this to me?"

"Because you read everything," she said. "He told me that once. Like it was a bad thing."

I punched in the code.

She followed me into the office and put the box on my father's desk, which Jubal had brought back that week.

My crew was coming in for the day shift.

They saw her through the window and slowed down.

She sat in the client chair in a wrinkled sweater and held her own elbows.

"An auditor for the tower investors called my desk," she said. "He asked who Riverside Holdings Two is. Brantley says it's nothing. He says auditors always ask."

"Then why are you here?"

"Because he wouldn't look at me when he said it."

I opened the box.

It wasn't the whole company. It was what he'd given her to sign, and what she'd found when she finally read it.

An operating agreement for that LLC, Riverside Holdings Two.

One member.

Shayla Rhoads. Managing member. Sole signer on every account.

A bank statement, three months old.

I read the balance twice.

Eleven million, two hundred thousand dollars.

"Where did it come from?" I asked.

"I don't know. He said it was a holding account. For the tower."

I flipped the statement over.

Every deposit came from Talmadge Landing's investor account. Every one approved with her signature.

"Did you sign these transfers?"

"He gave me a stack every Friday. I signed where the yellow flags were." She swallowed. "He said that's what managing member means. You sign where the flags are."

"Do you know what it means if that money wasn't supposed to leave the tower account?"

She didn't answer.

She knew. That was why she was here.

I closed the box.
