Chapter 16: Convalescent House

Linnet's POV

Corwin offered to come with me to Harbor Street.

I said no.

He said nothing for a moment, and then he sent two Guards to wait in the street instead.

The Southbay house was white stone with a green door and a brass plate that read only Convalescent House.

A nurse in a gray apron took me up a staircase that smelled of salt and carbolic.

Bridie's room was at the end of the landing.

She lay propped on three pillows in a plain nightgown, and I stopped in the doorway.

She was thinner than she had been at the willow.

I had seen her in cream silk and diamond earrings, flushed and weeping and lovely.

I had never seen the bones of her wrists.

"You came," she said.

"The Alpha said you wouldn't take your medicine until I did."

"I didn't think I should have it."

"Why not?"

She turned her face to the window.

"Because I know what I did to you."

I came in and sat in the chair by the bed. I did not take her hand.

"Say it," I said.

Her mouth shook.

"I knew he was yours. The first day, when he told me his name, I knew."

"And?"

"And I let him sit by my bed every night anyway."

"You wore the bangle I paid for."

"Garrick brought it to me. I knew whose money it was. I told myself you'd never find out."
