Chapter 29: The Stage
Hayes's boat picked us up off the barge in four minutes flat.
He hauled Patty aboard first. Then me.
He didn't let go of my hand when I was in.
The stage was a plywood platform at the foot of the town dock, lit by two work lights and the news van's mast.
The three judges stood at a microphone with a big glass trophy shaped like a rocket.
The man from Lansing read the scores in reverse, the way they always do.
Third place, Wisconsin.
Second place, the downstate company with the red show.
Then he paused.
"First place in this year's Lakes Cup, with the highest score this association has given in eleven years."
"Blue Hour Fireworks and Moss Brothers Fireworks."
The noise was so loud I felt it in my teeth.
Hayes lifted me off the sand for one second, then set me down.
The young one was jumping up and down. The two Moss men were hugging each other. My two hands were pounding the older one on the back.
Patty stood perfectly still with her arms crossed and tears running straight down her face.
